Elemental Roots E.D.U. is a transformative learning community rooted in nature, collaboration, and empowerment — where families and students grow together, thrive collectively, and embrace their role within the environment.
Targeting an open date of Fall 2026 for ages 4–11, our tuition-free public charter school connects children to both the natural world and their community through hands-on, project-based learning.
At Elemental Roots, the classroom extends far beyond four walls — into forests, gardens, and local spaces that spark curiosity, creativity, and confidence. Parents in our Northwoods community told us they want “a mix of outdoor learning opportunities, project-based learning, life skills & free space to be creative.”

Our vision is to nurture lifelong learners who feel deeply connected to this land, their community, and the responsibility we all share to care for it.

Children are meant to move, explore, and discover. Research shows that outdoor learning improves focus, strengthens relationships, and supports both academic and emotional growth.
In our recent community survey, families emphasized the importance of hands-on, active learning and environments where children could both move freely and reflect quietly. At Elemental Roots, nature isn’t just a backdrop — it’s the teacher itself:

Three decades of nature-based learning in the Northwoods.
Elemental Roots E.D.U. grows from the long-standing success of Terri’s Treehouse Early Learning Center — a nationally accredited, 5-Star YoungStar program that has prepared children for traditional schooling for over 30 years.
With three buildings, four playgrounds, and a 100×100-foot outdoor classroom, our site provides the perfect setting for experiential, project-based education. Partnerships with local businesses, community organizations, and the Lac du Flambeau Band foster cultural understanding and ensure our students learn through authentic connection.

A new public charter option for Northwoods families
Elemental Roots E.D.U. plans to open in Fall 2026 for students ages 4–11. The goal is to be a public charter authorized by one of the local school districts, and we’ll be open to all families — at no cost.
We complement (existing) district programs by offering a hands-on, movement-based, and nature-driven approach that supports modern family lifestyles.
Who can attend? Any Wisconsin student ages 4–11.
What’s the day like? Outdoor exploration, projects, reflection, and play.
Childcare options? Early care and after-school programs from 6 months – 12 years at Terri’s Treehouse.
